2 New Ateliers to Foster Sustainable Electric Vehicle Battery Value Chain in the DRC and South Africa
The two ateliers will be delivered in Spring 2023 by CSR Europe in the framework of the project Extractives for Sustainability – the project funded by the German Development Agency GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and focussed on fostering sustainable supply chains in the automotive industry.
CSR Europe is set to deliver two sustainability ateliers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) - in collaboration with the Chamber of Mines DRC – and South Africa. The Ateliers aim at empowering the creation of local sustainability networks that can work together with local stakeholders, like the Minerals’ Council and the Congolese Employers Federation (FEC), for the pursuit of a sustainable electric vehicle battery value chain. In the DRC, the activity will focus on copper and cobalt, while in South Africa on manganese and iron ore.
The activities are part of the project Extractives for Sustainability, funded by the German Development Agency GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to facilitate responsible sourcing and due diligence of minerals and metals used by the automotive industry in batteries.
CSR Europe’s engagement in 2023 builds on last year’s delivery of a first atelier in Lubumbashi (DRC), where +70 participants, including Her Excellence the Belgian Consul-General and a representative of the Congolese Presidential Cabinet, tackled shared sustainability challenges in the copper-cobalt mining industry and focused on the integration of local workforces into the Large-Scale Mining (LSM) industry and community engagement.
