Autostrade per l'Italia Group Joins CSR Europe to Make Mobility Increasingly Sustainable, Safe, Innovative and Efficient

Italy’s leading highway infrastructure operator will collaborate with the European Business Network for Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility to solidify its position as the forefront leader in sustainable mobility across Europe.

CSR Europe has welcomed the Autostrade per l'Italia Group amongst its community of 38 corporate members. With this move, Italy’s leading highway infrastructure operator - with over 3,000 km of network under concession, and one of Europe's leading mobility players - takes a key step forward in its efforts to become the leader of sustainable mobility in Europe.

The Group - on a mission to make mobility increasingly sustainable, safe, innovative, and efficient - manages approximately 50% of Italy's national network, spanning 15 regions and 60 provinces. This vast network includes over 4,200 bridges and viaducts, as well as approximately 420 kilometres of tunnels. Moreover, the Group operates 218 service areas strategically positioned throughout the country. In 2020, Autostrade per l'Italia embarked on a transformative journey, resulting in the emergence of an integrated Group that delivers engineering services and construction capacity (Amplia and Tecne); advanced digital services for sustainable mobility (Movyon and Free To X); and infrastructures for the generation of renewable energy sources (Elgea). This strategic transformation has enabled Autostrade per l'Italia to evolve into a multifaceted organization, poised to play a significant role in Italy's infrastructure and transportation landscape.

Concetta Testa, Head of Sustainability function*, declared:

“Becoming a part of the CSR Europe Community, helps us plan and implement sustainability strategies and projects, sharing know-how and experiences with a powerful international network, to build a substantial widespread systemic approach to sustainability”

The Group is committed to implementing a €21 billion capital expenditures and maintenance program by the year 2038. This endeavour ranks among the most pivotal infrastructural development initiatives in Italy, and it will be predominantly carried out in the coming years, with significant implications in terms of employment and overall economic growth.

The infrastructure sector plays a pivotal role in advancing a sustainable development model that encompasses environmental, social, and economic aspects. Its impact on communities and territories is profound yet complex. To align mobility infrastructures with global sustainability and resilience goals, Autostrade wants to go beyond existing standards, reimagining transportation's future, re-evaluating processes, reforming governance, and optimizing resource use. To this end in 2021, Autostrade set forth objectives and initiatives reaffirming its aspiration to become a leading player in designing and operating sustainable mobility systems. This move underscores the Group’s commitment to driving transformative change in the sector, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future.

In response to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Group has embarked on a transformative journey that weaves sustainability into its core mission and interactions with stakeholders. As a result, Autostrade adopted a "Net Zero" ambition, aligning itself with the overarching goal of capping global temperature rise at 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050. To solidify this commitment, Autostrade formalised its decarbonisation strategy, which redefines its baseline for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and is certified by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi).
