On 1-3 June, CSR Europe will attend in person the DCR Mining Week 2022 in Lubumbashi - the mining capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo – in an effort to engage and dialogue with industry leaders for the sustainable and responsible sourcing of raw materials needed in the production of batteries for Electric Vehicles (EV).

This important milestone is part of the strategy developed in the project “Extractives for Development”, led by CSR Europe and funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation  (GIZ). The project aims at bringing together mining companies, subcontractors, suppliers, and civil society in a collaborative effort to strengthen capacity building on responsible sourcing and due diligence practices in the EV battery value chain.

Ahead of the DCR Mining Week 2022, on 30 May, CSR Europe will host a stakeholder dialogue in Lubumbashi in collaboration with its local partner, the DRC Chambre des Mines. The event will bring together Chinese, Western, and Congolese mining companies and their subcontractors, as well as governmental actors and civil society organisations to identify and prioritize common challenges in copper and cobalt mining in DRC and explore the possibility of joint/individual actions. The conversation with participants will then continue at the Belgian Consulate in Lubumbashi, for an informal gathering aimed at fostering capacity building.

A few days after, at the DRC Mining Week, CSR Europe will deliver a technical workshop in collaboration with the Belgian Development Agency Enabel on the 2nd of June. The event will address “Mining operations as a driver for capacity building and inclusion” and focus on building on good practices and tackling common challenges. Speakers include representatives from Enabel, BMW, subcontractors, Congolese, Chinese, and Western mining companies. Also in the planning is a two-day visit to artisanal mining sites in Kolwezi and informal meetings with mining companies’ subcontractors to openly discuss their sustainability challenges.
