Is Your Company’s HR Process Ethnically Inclusive?

  • CSR Europe’s new assessment tool can help your company to embed Ethnic Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) into your business model and improve the acquisition of new talents with a multicultural background.

In many European countries, residents with a non-European background continue to face difficulties in accessing employment opportunities compared to natives. According to the European statistical office (Eurostat), in 2020, the EU employment rate for people aged 20 to 64 years was 61.9 % for those born outside the EU, and 73.5 % for the native-born population. In other words, when it comes to hiring, a large pool of talents is slipping through companies’ HR processes. How can companies prevent this from happening?

Although diversity and inclusion are often part of the company’s strategy, very few initiatives focus on ethnic diversity and systematically embed it in the business model. This is partially due to the challenges of selecting a criterion to define ethnic diversity – does it stem from ethnicity, culture, or the nationality of parents? – while respecting data privacy.

To support companies in securing all the talents they need to grow their business, CSR Europe has developed the Ethnic Diversity and Inclusion Management Assessment. This tool assesses the performance of a company in the different pillars of the ideal business model for an inclusive and ethnically diverse workforce - Figure 1 -, highlighting strengths and areas for improvements as well as tailored recommendations to advance on ethnic D&I practices.

In the evaluation process, each section – Strategic Commitment; Management Processes; Plan, Do, Check, Act - is weighted differently, based on your company’s priority and level of actions it needs to implement.

The Ethnic Diversity and Inclusion Management Assessment has been developed by CSR Europe in the framework of the project Business Uniting Talents 2030 (BUT2030), to promote ethnic diversity and facilitate the inclusion of employees with multicultural backgrounds.

Project partners AGC, AJ Regniers, AXA, ENGIE, L’Oréal, Janssen, Solvay, Telenet, and The Port of Antwerp have already successfully used the tool.
