ATELIER - Workforce Wellbeing: Dealing with Forced Labour Issues in the Automotive Supply Chain

CLOSED EVENT-DRIVE SUSTAINABILITY MEMBERS ONLY

Governments and civil society actors are increasingly demanding companies to position themselves and demonstrate that no forced labour is present in their supply chains.

In June 2021, the USA Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act came into force, establishing a presumption that the import of goods produced in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) is prohibited. At the European level, the European Commission is working on a proposal to ban products made with forced labour on the EU market. Meanwhile, an increasing number of reports highlight the risk of forced labour cases in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), alleging linkages to the automotive supply chains.

The political sensitivity around the topic, as well as the high level of dependency on China of the automobile supply chain, makes it difficult for companies to navigate.

What is the context of this complex situation? What are the expectations from civil society actors and regulators towards the automotive industry?
