How to undertake a smooth alignment of corporates’ business models to ESG, while ensuring sound economic performance? How can sustainable finance facilitate the achievement of SDGs?
The race to mitigate climate change and tackle human rights issues has translated into numerous sustainability commitments from policymakers, government officials, business leaders, and civil society organisations. The time has come to translate commitments into practical actions, implementing the right financial mechanisms to ensure investment in sustainable and innovative solutions.
Sustainable finance is vital to boost a digital & green transition. It encourages transparency and value-oriented investment thinking and integrates ESG objectives and sustainable development criteria into finance decisions and impact measurement. As ESG has now clear balance sheet implications, investors and insurers are raising questions on how companies’ non-financial performance is evaluated, managed, and reported, as well as on how they are assessing ESG risks while guaranteeing long-term value creation.
Sustainable finance covers a wide range of financial products and services, and it is based on three main pillars, namely investment, banking and insurance products. To meet the growing demand, new financial and evaluation tools, such as sustainability bonds, emission trading schemes and financial impact measurement instruments have been introduced. At the same time, thematic investment funds are starting to boost, with renewable energy, climate adaptation and sustainable infrastructure being the areas with the highest interest.
The widening use of AI and the active engagement of financial institutions in supporting social inclusion and green transition will shape the debate in the upcoming years. These trends, together with increased transparency towards retail investors and widespread awareness on the SDGs, are expected to fuel a market’s growth.
This sessions aims to provide some examples of companies and stakeholders that are already working in this direction. In the first half of the session, we will look at the strategic level and how companies can implement successful sustainability-aligned financial strategies, focusing on the role of Chief Financial Officers (CFOs). In the second session, we will instead look at some instruments, tools and initiatives put in place by leading entities to promote sustainability and climate neutrality.
