Telecom operators are committed to reduce CO2 consumption and to limit their impacts on the planet while delivering innovative services. The industry, including the telecom suppliers, are facing new and unprecedented challenges to increase their operational/environmental efficiency, to design products easier to reuse and recycle. Developing and adopting the circular economy for network equipment is a major and irreversible milestone movement trend to reach carbon neutrality in 2050 as pledged by GSMA.
In the Telco system, get materials at the end of their life back to proper recycling is one of the main challenges. Despite the many good practices supporting circular economy, waste avoidance and product recycling are not yet the focus of ICT Industry. There are many challenges ahead for this sector particularly in refurbishing and remanufacturing when it comes to substituting obsolete products for future generation technologies such as the 5G or upgrades related to cybersecurity.
Climate change, health crises and strong competition from the GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft) is pushing to rethink the current industrial system in favour of innovative circular business models, efficient and that respect the environment. Models that can integrate indicators for carbon impact in all the strategic decisions taken by a company. In line with the precepts of Circular economy, it’s to this end that Telcom Operators are proposing positive initiatives for a sustainable supply and the extension of the useful life of equipment through support, reuse, reconditioning and repair. Initiatives that require a strong engagement of all the actors of the ICT Industry to change the paradigm of Linear Economy.
This European roundtable will represent the opportunity for Telecom operators, suppliers as well as regulatory bodies to design a collaborative platform to support their respective and coordinated efforts to embrace the business paradigm shift for IT&N equipment.
