On Wednesday, February 19, CSR Europe held its first 2025 sustainability policy update, focusing on the recently adopted EU Forced Labour Regulation. This new law prohibits the sale of any product made with forced labour in the EU, regardless of its origin. While enforcement will begin in 2027, businesses are urged to act now, as there is still an opportunity to shape how the regulation will be applied.

During the webinar, a representative from the European Commission called for input from practitioners and concurrently they emphasized the need for greater support. Key takeaways from the discussion included:

  • Enforcement Challenges – EU investigations may take up to nine months, yet factories using forced labour can relocate in weeks. Businesses stressed the need for stronger in-country enforcement to ensure the regulation has a real impact.

  • The Need for Collaboration – Many companies lack the authority to audit suppliers in certain countries, whereas the EU has greater access. A stronger partnership between businesses, and national and local institutions is essential.

  • A Multi-Stakeholder Panel in Development – The European Commission is considering a dedicated panel to better understand business challenges and support implementation. CSR Europe fully supports this initiative.

This webinar marked an important step in preparing businesses for compliance while advocating for clear and effective enforcement mechanisms.

CSR Europe will continue to facilitate dialogue with EU policymakers and support its members as the regulation takes shape.
