Ensuring the Working Conditions of Truck Drivers

Extensive sub-contracting, cross-border exploitation of different national legislation, inadequate drivers’ facilities, and driver shortage are only some of the difficult situations faced by European truck drivers. At the next virtual working group meeting, on 28 May, project partners will discuss how to move forward to common Guiding Principles.

The road transport industry has been under scrutiny for a long period due to the working conditions of truck drivers. Logistics practices are more often than not based on quick and affordable deliveries which result in a squeeze on cost and time for the companies operating in the industry. Pressure is also aggravated by extensive sub-contracting, cross-border exploitation of different national legislation and a European-wide driver shortage. To tackle these challenges, several logistics and manufacturing companies joined forces in the collaborative platform Responsible Trucking, facilitated by CSR Europe.

At the next working group meeting on Thursday 28 May, project partners will discuss how to align the expectations that companies within the industry have with regards to their sub-contractors: what should be the working hours? And the remuneration? Which facilities should drivers have access to?

The common principles will be defined over the coming months via direct stakeholder consultation, and will form the basis for the development of a spot-check tool to assess current levels of compliance.

Responsible Trucking is still accepting new members. Interested companies are invited to contact Daniel Lissoni, Responsible Trucking Project Manager.
