IBM's Diversity & Inclusion Report 2020

In 2020, the convergence of racial injustice and the global pandemic amplified the stark need for swift and greater progress from society and businesses.

COVID-19 disrupted all of our lives, though not in equal measure. Working women were challenged by the pandemic, causing millions to leave the workforce. On top of that, we witnessed social injustices that sparked a global movement, bringing conversations about inequality to the forefront. All of this has brought IBM to accelerate its journey of diversity and inclusion, channeling what 2020 taught us all into outcome-oriented, rigorous actions focused on four strategic areas:

  • Advocacy that drives systemic change which creates an opportunity for diverse communities.

  • Allyship where we provide the training and support to help every IBMer be an upstander through inclusive behaviors.

  • Employee experiences that champion all diverse communities of IBMers and support every employee to thrive and bring their authentic selves to work.

  • Accountability that harnesses data transparency and AI to enable action and deliver outcomes for increased diversity representation and inclusion at every level of the company.

The Diversity & Inclusion Report 2020 outlines key actions in these areas and tells the stories of IBMers that illustrate how life-changing diversity and inclusion in action can be.

Join the celebrations for the European Diversity Month this May. Throughout the month, CSR Europe will run a social media campaign that will raise awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion in our workplaces and in the society throughout the whole European Union.

We will also share how companies are using the Ethnic Diversity and Inclusion Management Assessment to facilitate the inclusion of employees with multicultural backgrounds in the workplace. The tool - developed by CSR Europe in the framework of the project Business Uniting Talents 2030 (BUT2030) - assesses the performance of a company in the different pillars of the ideal business model for inclusion & diversity, highlighting strengths and areas for improvements as well as providing tailored recommendations to advance on ethnic D&I practices.
