As the European Commission (EC) enters its 2024-2029 term, significant transformations are anticipated.

President Ursula von der Leyen has introduced an ambitious industrial strategy aimed at driving sustainability, innovation, and economic competitiveness across the European Union. This strategy emphasizes key pillars, including prosperity, clean and just transitions, investment unions, and global strategic partnerships—echoing the concerns highlighted in the CSR Europe Manifesto for a Just Industrial Transition.

A top priority for the new EC will be aligning policies with the European Green Deal, the 2030 Climate Targets, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each commissioner will ensure that regulations remain proportionate while fostering regular dialogue between policymakers and businesses. This reflects the EC's commitment to bridging the gap between sustainability goals and real-world business challenges.

Several key figures will shape this transformation:

  • Stéphane Séjourné will lead efforts on prosperity and industrial strategy

  • Teresa Ribera will oversee clean, just, and competitive transitions

  • Wopke Hoekstra is tasked with advancing climate neutrality and clean growth

  • Maria Luis Albuquerque will manage financial services and investment strategies

This new alignment of industry and sustainability underscores the EC’s ambition to lead Europe in green innovation while maintaining a robust economy. Businesses across the EU are encouraged to stay engaged, with CSR Europe playing a key role in facilitating policy discussions through its European CSO Network.

The first meeting between the new EC and the members of the European Chief Sustainability Officers Network will be held on December 5th in Brussels. Interested parties can contact Jan Noterdaeme for more information.
