What Comes Next for Human Rights Due Diligence?

Due diligence and sustainable supply chains will be at the core of the EU agenda under the German Presidency of the European Council, set to start on July 1st. Already in April, Didier Reynders, EU Commissioner for Justice, announced the Commission’s commitment to introduce mandatory corporate environmental and human rights due diligence. As a result, every company acting in the single market would have to observe the law. While such a legislation would contribute to establishing a level playing field, it also raises an important question: how to efficiently implement the due diligence process? In other words, how can companies make sure that their efforts have a real impact on the environment and for the workers in the supply chain, local communities, and society at large?

THE DUTY TO COLLABORATE

CSR Europe’s community of practice “Beyond Due Diligence” is fully engaged in this EU policy dialogue.  In July, CSR Europe published the first discussion paper “For a Coherent and Integrated EU Approach to Due Diligence”. In this draft text we invite all corporate members, partner companies, National Partner Organisations, supply chain sector initiatives and stakeholders to share with us their feedback and comments.

After bringing together sector initiatives to explore common challenges in supply chain sustainability, in the coming months we will facilitate sector and cross-sector collaboration to leverage our collective knowledge and scale up impact.

CSR Europe members, companies and sector initiatives are invited to join the upcoming Beyond Due Diligence” webinars to further this dialogue.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Share best practices & learn from their peers

  • Incubate collaborative platforms to tackle common due diligence challenges (i.e. how to engage the chief procurement officers and buyers; how to assess of risks related to raw materials; how technologies can facilitate supply chain visibility)

  • Discover practical tools and instruments to implement an effective sustainable supply chain

  • Engage with EU policymakers on due diligence

Due to our extensive experience in supply chain sustainability, we are bringing to the table practical and innovative solutions for an effective multi-stakeholder collaboration. In the tyre industry, we supported the creation of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber. CSR Europe is also currently leading the collaborative platforms Drive Sustainability in the automotive sector, and Responsible Trucking in logistics. Later in June, we started rolling out the “Extractives for Development” project in the cobalt and platinum mining industry with the support of the German development agency (GIZ).
