Responsible Trucking's Advances in Social Sustainability Compliance
2024 has been a pivotal year for Responsible Trucking, marked by significant progress in compliance – with the implementation of the Spot Check Tool and updated Social Guidelines - stakeholder collaboration, and increasing visibility for our platform. While much remains to be done, the leading collaborative platform dedicated to improving truck drivers' working conditions in Europe continues to grow, supported by partners – Baton, Daimler Truck, H&M Group, Ikea Supply AG, Iveco Group, MAN, Postnord, Raben, Scania, Volvo Group, and Volvo Cars.
Strengthening Compliance: Implementation of the Spot Check Tool
Building on the 2023 pilot of the Spot Check Tool (SCT) - a survey directly addressing truck drivers and their working conditions inside partners’ facilities and within their logistic supply chain – CSR Europe established a working group with several partners to enhance the tool and ensure it better serves the needs of the initiative. This autumn, Responsible Trucking completed a full SCT cycle between October and November. The initial results will be discussed with partners in December and shared with a wider network of stakeholders during a dedicated webinar in January 2025.
Reviewing the Social Guidelines for Suppliers
In 2024, Responsible Trucking Partners reviewed the Truck Transport Social Guidelines (TTSG), originally published in 2021, and on 29th September, we released version 2.0. With upcoming legislation such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), these guidelines have been instrumental in translating complex legislative requirements into clear, actionable directives. Social sustainability, a challenging topic to address, is made more accessible through the requirements outlined, facilitating their application in companies’ daily operations. A wide array of key stakeholders have been consulted as partners prepared to update the TTSG, including the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the European Commission’s DG MOVE, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), and the European Union of Transport Workers’ Associations (UETR). Further opportunities to align Responsible Trucking with broader EU priorities arose in October when DG MOVE representative Ewa Ptaszyńska joined platform partners to share insights into potential initiatives from the new European Commission.
The efforts of the Responsible Trucking initiative gained wider recognition this year. Germany’s Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) recognized the platform as “the largest corporate initiative to improve working conditions and prevent human rights violations by truck drivers in Germany and Europe.”
