Tires keep the world moving. The tire sector and its value chain have a vital role in creating a future with environmentally friendly, safe, efficient and accessible mobility for all.
To translate the industry’s vision for sustainable mobility into action, the Tire Industry Project (TIP) - a sectorial initiative created by 11 leading tyre companies - recently launched a new roadmap. The “Sustainability Driven: Accelerating Impact with the Tire Sector SDG Roadmap” outlines how the tyre value chain interacts with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the fields where the tyre industry has the most impact and the key steps to scale and accelerate its contribution to tackle the world’s most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. These challenges and impacts cannot be tackled in isolation from each other, and require a holistic approach and the active involvement of all relevant actors in the value chain through the creation of inclusive partnerships and collaborations.
One example of these already existing multi-stakeholder collaborations is the European TRWP Platform. Launched in 2018 by the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA) and facilitated by CSR Europe, the European TRWP Platform is a cross-sectorial initiative bringing together relevant stakeholders, public authorities and research institutes to share scientific knowledge and co-create mitigation actions to tackle the generation and transportation of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) into the environment.
Tyre and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) are tiny debris which are formed during normal driving conditions from the friction between the tyre and the road necessary to ensure sufficient grip and safety. Because of their size and composition, these particles are commonly associated with microplastics.
The generation of TRWP is influenced by a variety of external factors including, but not limited to, tyre design. These include vehicle characteristics, road surface, weather, road topology and driving behaviour. This is why the European TRWP Platform aims to engage all relevant parties to develop a holistic approach to collectively address this issue.
