Tyre and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) are tiny debris that are formed during normal driving conditions from the friction between the tyre and the road necessary to ensure sufficient grip and safety. Because of their size and composition, these particles are commonly associated with microplastics.
The friction between tyre and road is essential to ensure drivers’ safety and cannot be easily reduced. In addition, TRWP levels in the environment do not depend exclusively on tyre design but are affected by several external factors, such as driving behaviour, road and vehicle characteristics, wastewater treatment, etc.
To respond to this complex sustainability challenge, the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA) launched in 2018 the European TRWP Platform, facilitated by CSR Europe. The European TRWP Platform is a cross-sectorial initiative that brings together industry sectors (e.g., tyre, automotive & road sectors), public authorities and research institutes to share scientific knowledge and co-create mitigation actions to tackle the generation and transportation of tyre and road wear particles into the environment.
