Toyota’s 2020 Environmental Report

Toyota Environmental Report

Environmental issues may entail both business risks and opportunities. It is therefore essential to identify key issues from both risk and opportunity perspectives when formulating environmental strategies. In order to grasp the potential risks and opportunities, Toyota has identified and assessed global environmental issues from the standpoints of relevance to stakeholders and importance to their business.

In the area of environment, Toyota is advancing specific initiatives including the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, based on the Toyota Earth Charter -established in 1992 and revised in 2000.

The Environmental Report 2020 outlines six environmental challenges:

  • New Vehicle Zero CO2 Emissions Challenge: reduce global average CO2 emissions from new vehicles by 90% compared to Toyota’s 2010 levels by 2050.

  • Plant Zero CO2 Emissions Challenge: achieve zero CO2 emissions at global plants by 2050.

  • Life Cycle Zero CO2 Emissions Challenge: eliminate all CO2 emissions throughout the entire vehicle life cycle.

  • Challenge of Minimizing and Optimizing Water Usage: minimize water usage and implement water discharge management according to individual local conditions.

  • Challenge of Establishing a Recycling-based Society and Systems: promote the global deployment of End-of-life vehicle treatment and recycling technologies and systems developed in Japan.

  • Challenge of Establishing a Future Society in Harmony with Nature: connect nature conservation activities beyond the Toyota Group and its business partners among communities with the world, to the future.
