Africa has shown great progress in the development of its solar energy markets in the last couple of years. For example, the continent experienced a growth of over 1.8W of new solar installations, mainly driven by Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia and Ghana.
However, much work still needs to be done to scale up renewable energy projects and to achieve real impact. Inadequate access to energy is still a major obstacle for Africa’s development. Following the current trajectory, in 2030 over 600 million people in Africa will be living without access to electricity (equivalent to 36% of the population). Bridging this energy access gap will require upward of 300 GW of renewable capacity.
Most of the investment will have to come from the private sector, as public financing is not expected to exceed its current level of 15% (IRENA). So, how to mobilize private capital? Which challenges are still hampering private investments? And how to overcome them?
This session aims to answer these questions and to explore how to advance European investments in the African renewable energy sector, identifying how to scale up existing projects and maximise impact.
JOIN THIS EUROPEAN SDG ROUNDTABLE TO:
Discuss how to enable a less-risky environment for renewable energy investments in Africa.
Explore the feasibility of an institutional framework to strengthen renewable energy investments.
Discover opportunities for building a multi-stakeholder dialogue in selected African countries.
Learn more about the renewAfrica initiative.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Financial, industrial and development actors in the renewable energy sector.
European institutional actors from the renewable energy sector.
European funding institutions.
Anyone interested in Africa’s sustainable energy transition.
