ORSE Publishes the Report “Double Materiality and Sustainability Matters”

The French Observatory on CSR (ORSE) published in March the English version of its Report “Double Materiality and Sustainability Matters; Key Challenges to be Addressed under the CSRD in collaboration with the French Business School Audencia, French Audit and Internal Control Institute (IFACI), and PwC France.

While the aims of the double materiality exercise are clear, many questions remain as to how the exercise will actually be carried out and how the various principles and objectives set out by the ESRS will be put into practice. It is still a relatively new and complex concept, owing to its many facets.

The Report aims to provide practical suggestions to companies of all sizes on how to undertake a double materiality analysis and make it a useful strategic exercise.

The Report is an outcome of discussions between companies soon to be involved in CSRD. In 2023, various working groups were set up to discuss the difficulties encountered and to identify possible solutions in order to maximise the potential of double materiality.

A number of issues came to light during these discussions, although not all of them could be addressed during the sessions.

The key topics examined during the working groups are presented below, and the related findings are shared in the report:

  • Roles and responsibilities in double materiality

  • What level of granularity should be applied?

  • How should the value chain(s) be taken into account?

  • How should stakeholders’ views be taken into account?

  • How can the assessment be incorporated into existing processes?
