Many downstream industries, from automotive, steel, and ICT, to construction and cement, are confronted with the challenge of sourcing raw materials sustainably.
However, for the individual company alone, it is very difficult to engage with mines at local level, where the sourcing happens, especially if their counterpart is extracting thousand different raw materials.
A concerted, multi-stakeholder effort to assess, define and address the need for a more sustainable sourcing of raw material has the potential to achieve greater impact and may result in longer lasting changes compared to one-to-one engagement between mining companies and their local suppliers alone. Understanding common risks and issues faced by companies and sectors, is therefore key to take concerted action.
Join this roundtable to discover how the challenge of sustainable sourcing of raw materials in mining is being addressed by GIZ and the leading automotive initiative Drive Sustainability. This session will bring together the practical experience of mining certification with IRMA and Anglo American with the experience of leading companies with a strong, local engagement approach such as BMW, Huayou Cobalt, and Umicore.
Levin Sources will provide insights on how to address complex issues around mining communities. CSR Europe will present its new GIZ-funded project on “Extractives for Development” to build local sustainability networks in Africa.
