THE PIVOTAL ROLE OF INDUSTRY APPROACHES TO SUSTAINABILITY
Industry federations are uniquely positioned to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable world. That is why the Pact 4 Sustainable Industry focuses on the role industry federations can play to mainstream sustainability and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In turn, this will strengthen the competitiveness of the European industry.
To succeed, shared visions and principles need to be translated into roadmaps and collaborative actions. This will allow enhanced sustainability performance for the entire sector, creating new business opportunities.
IT IS A MATTER OF LEADERSHIP
The translation of a shared industry vision into a common roadmap increases vertical and horizontal cooperation and creates a competitive advantage for companies of that sector. Some industrial sectors are already advancing on their sustainability roadmaps while others are still at the definition phase.
The process to develop and implement a successful roadmap is the same for different sectors. This session will explore how different industries have advanced and will highlight the role that individual companies can play in their industry federations.
Six industry federations and their member companies will be discussing their approaches:
The European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) - Cefic presented its sustainability journey: Starting from a Vision, then a Charter and the SDG Roadmap, and now working on sustainable development indicators.
European Aluminum – presented the European aluminium industry’s Sustainability Roadmap towards 2025 and how it was developed.

Eurogas/DNV GL study ‘Pathway to a carbon neutral 2050: the role of gas’ and Eurogas call for a binding GHG intensity reduction and renewable gas targets
The Responsible Jewellery Council - shared the learnings on how to accelerate industry-wide progress towards the SDGs through the implementation of the Code of Practices and transformative partnerships in an evolving regulatory landscape.
